Early Neurological Stimulation

From the publication, “Another Piece of the Puzzle:  Puppy Development” by Pat Hastings & Erin Ann Rouse we find the information we use on our little “I” puppies.  Research has shown (Fox, Scott and Fuller) that newborn puppies can respond to thermal, tactile and motor stimulation.  Mild stress activities create changes in the puppies systems (electrical activity in the brain, muscle tension, changes in oxygen level and breathing).  Compared to non-stressed puppies later in life, Fox says “stressed puppies respond in a “graded” fashion, while the non-stressed puppies responded in an “all or nothing” way.”  The stressed puppies, according to the research, were more resistant to some forms of cancer and disease, withstood exposure to cold better, were more stable, explored their surroundings more and learned faster.
Here are some photos of our model “Ignacio” showing his neurological stimulation exercises.  These exercises are done for a total of 3-5 seconds once per day from day 3 to day 16.

Our “I” puppies have completed these exercises and have moved on to “bigger puppy” stimulation exercises which include full body massage (oh to be a little puppy), introducing toys & sound and of course continuing with a lot of love.
There is good news on the Canine Partners of the Rockies front – we have enough volunteers to raise our new puppies.  However, if you are interested in puppy raising or other volunteer opportunities with CaPR, please visit our website or call the office.  We have puppies donated to us from breeders at different times so we keep a list of potential puppy raisers on file.
