two hearts, four paws : Day & Thatcher, dillon, and Granby
At Canine Partners of the Rockies, our volunteers are the heart of our organization, dedicating countless hours to raising and training future service dogs. This month, we shine our volunteer spotlight on Day Reynolds, a remarkable puppy raiser and sitter whose long-term commitment and passion have made a significant impact on our organization.
Day's journey with Canine Partners of the Rockies began in 2017 when she recalled a former colleague raising a service dog for another organization and decided she might want to do the same thing. "Being single and living alone, I thought having a dog might be a good way to meet new people. But I wasn’t sure I was ready to commit to having a dog for life… I thought this would be a great way to try out having a dog.”
Soon after she reached out to Canine Partners of the Rockies, Day met her first service dog in training, Thatcher. After Thatcher was matched with his person, Day was a frequent puppy sitter, and then she helped raise Dillon (recently matched), and is now raising Granby, who just moved from his first puppy raiser home. Day also volunteers as part of our new breeding program – assisting with planning and socialization for our youngest pups.
Day says the most rewarding part of puppy raising is “Watching the dogs learn as they grow – they are so proud to figure out what the handler is asking of them! It’s amazing to watch them grow from little puppies experiencing the world to dogs that are excited to help their person with whatever they might need.”
When asked what she would tell Granby’s future client, Day says “Granby is not going to let you not live life! He wants you to get moving – whether you walk or you roll…” It sounds like Granby will be great at helping his future partner live their best life!
To those considering becoming a puppy raiser, Day offers these words of encouragement: "Volunteering for CaPR is very rewarding! I appreciate that the organization is small but intends on growing. Training classes are fun. The staff and other volunteers create a warm atmosphere in which I feel valued.”
To others in the CaPR office, Day is the kind of person who will always jump in and help wherever she is needed. Day also has extensive knowledge on the history of Canine Partners and our matched dogs. As an organization with a lot of new faces, we all appreciate this so much!
Canine Partners of the Rockies is immensely grateful to volunteers like Day. Her unwavering dedication, compassion, and hard work embody the spirit of our mission. Thank you, Day!
